Story Summary
Winnie Foster is a ten year old girl looking to get away from her yard that she is concealed to and watched over by her parents and grandmother. She decides that she is going to run away in the morning. She has been telling all of her problems to a toad on the other side of the fence. Because she wanted to prove the toad right she ran away. She wonders into the wood, and meets a man, Jesse. Winnie instantly falls in love with him and his curly hair. He is sitting against the stump of a huge tree and drinking water out of a spring in the ground. That's something she would never do. She asks Jesse what it tastes like, he says it was dirty and bad. Then why are you drinking it? That's something that he cant explain to Winnie. Thankfully his mother and brother show up, Mae and Miles. Winnie demands to know what the water actually tastes like, but she can't know, without out the Tucks "kidnapping" her and taking Winnie to their home about four hours away. Winnie starts to think that being kidnapped isn't so bad after all, and that all the bad things she imagined about kidnappers and being kidnapped aren't happening after all. Finally, after awhile the Tucks told Winnie why they had to kidnap her and why Jesse was drinking the spring water and Winnie wasn't aloud to. Not knowing they were being watched they proceeded to tell Winnie they're secret. The man in the yellow suit, had been watching them and following them all the way to they're home four hours away. Once they arrived at they're house The man in the yellow suit steals the Tucks horse and rides back to Treegap. In Treegap he goes to The Fosters house and tells them that he knows where Winnie is, and knows who and where the kidnappers are. He wants to make a deal with them, if he brings Winnie back he In the morning the man in the yellow suit and the constable ride to The Tucks house. In the morning, the man in the yellow suit and the Treegap constable went to the Tuck's house. While they were eating their pancakes their was a knock at the door, this has never happened before. At the door was the man in the yellow suit, there to take Winnie back, so he could have the wood with the spring in it. The man in the yellow suit threatened to tell their secret to the world, and sell the spring water with a guarantee to live forever. He took Winnie away dragging her with her screaming. Mae picked up the shotgun and hit him in the head with the barrel of the gun. He was out, on the ground. Just as the constable arrived, seeing the hit by Mae. The constable rode Mae and Winnie back to Treegap. Him, putting Mae in the gallows. The man in the yellow suit was dead, killed by Mae. Mae was sentenced to death toll, but she could not die. Days later, Jesse stopped by Winnies gate, the planned an escape for Mae at night, Winnie sneaking in and Mae getting out. Jesse gave Winnie a bottle of the spring water. Whens she turns 17 to drink it then come find Jesse so they could get married and live together forever and start a family. Mae snuck out of the gallows sucessfully, with Winnie crawling in after her. The last word that Jesse said to her was remember. Once the constable saw that Mae wasn't there in the morning he rode Winnie back to home. She had lost her parents trust forever. The toad that she had told her troubles to was looking very thirsty, she went up to her room and got the spring water and poured it on the toad, it deserved to live forever.
